blogging from college :D
Was blog-hopping and came across this one which was quite interesting. Being the book-worm I am (or used to be!), I've always fantasized about publishing my own best-seller some day. That explains why this blog intrigued me. It's mainly about how to write a good book, what to avoid when writing, etc.
Other than that, I've got a test tomorrow. Yup, Pengajian Malaysia may not be my favourite subject but I have to pass. Ahhh!!!! Not to mention I skipped my first two classes today morning (I've never done this before btw :P). Being the goody-good girl I am, I asked my lecturer for the work and now I've gotta complete that as well! By tomorrow!!
What else? I thought of revising my Accounting subject as my lecturer is going to discuss past year papers with us tomorrow. Guess that's moved down my priority list. Plus my Maths homework which I'm doubting about completing today *sigh*
I've also got to go through some stuff regarding the school reunion that I'm planning. Less than expected have confirmed but at least something right? Alright then, gonna make myself busy with something else...

Lunch hour
Today was pretty cool. Still laughing about lunch. See, there are 3 restaurants and a supermarket near my college. The first one is a Mamak shop (we were loyal customers) - we got tired of the food there and occasionally tried out another restaurant nearby. The food there was so-so. Then, a new Malay restaurant opened and we became instant loyal customers there hehe :) Food was more than reasonable and it was good.
Today, we walked up there and noticed that there were only leftovers. Squid and prawns aren't on the top of my list so had to ignore those two dishes. Plus, we mutually agreed on our taste for non-crowded areas. We walked out and slowly (painfully!) headed towards the other two restaurants. One of my friends initially had food poisoning after eating in one of the restaurants and had vowed never to return but today, he made an exception. So, I was unvoluntarily pushed towards that restaurant while my other two friends headed for the other one. We couldn't make up our minds!
Walking to the one I was 'pushed' into, we noticed that our all-time favourite dishes were gone! Gone, I tell you...poof! I looked outside. My other two friends were hesitantly walking into the other restaurant. In between us, a group of SPM students were lepaking after exams. Haven't I long passed that stage...argghhh!! The 4 of us were trying to decide where to go haha :D and our stomachs were pestering us to make up our minds!
The Mamak restaurant guy was persuading us to come in amidst our little discussion, pointing out the whole menu by heart, and asking us if we wanted anything in particular. They were determined to get us back! Finally, we made up our minds and walked to Giant instead. My friend and I tried something new - Nasi Ikan Kembung Bakar - quite tasty. My other friend, tired of the burnt waffles she kept getting, got them to add in more chocolate filling (yum!) and she didn't have to pay extra!
It's surprising how I almost always don't walk out of a place once I've entered and today, I walked out of 3! lol :) The sambal was really good by the way :9 Right then, work is pending. Shouldn't be procrastinating like this...

A Sunday wonder!
Today was just awesome. Went to Teluk Intan for a short visiting trip. Sort of a small road trip as well. Turned in late last night cos we siblings just couldn't stop talking hehe. A good 'siblings bonding time' that was, until appa came and switched off the lights. Am pretty sure it was past 2am. Had to wake up early.
Left at 9.30am...delays. Took the old road instead of the highway. Still regretting that we forgot the camera :( Beautiful sceneries...paddy fields stretched out as far as the eyes could see, oil palm plantations, friendly people just mingling with each other worrilessly (am not sure if that is even a word :p)..it was just beautiful. Not to mention, it was surprising to see a small town that crowded. Probably cos the school holidays just begun.
We headed for our relative's house. They had no idea we were coming. That's how we like it. So that no one waits for us...expectations...arriving on time...Very impromptu. Oh, the joy on their faces when they saw us...priceless! Especially when they saw appa, since appa had stayed with them for a bit when appa was much younger. They insisted we have lunch. I guess our convincing skills aren't as good as theirs (we had already taken lunch before coming in!).
They were living in the estates previously but had moved out after uncle retired. Appa suggested that we go back to the old place and we did. It was an awesome trip. We drove into the oil palm estate, accompanied by a steady narration of history of the place and the people who used to be there. Apparently, anything left behind by the people who worked there was not removed as it had historical value such as the word 'Registered Office' instead of 'Registration Office'. Pretty cool! Ah, if only I had the camera *sigh*
Then, we stopped at the middle of the estate...it was all quiet, calm, breathtaking. As uncle said, you would never find a life like that anywhere else. After being shown around, we stopped by a bakery where we could see how bread was being made. Saw the huge ovens they use to make so many different types of bread. It was amazing!
We returned shortly after cos we had to rush back for my cousin's engagement. Tiring journey indeed! Plans changed of course. Amma just told me that grandma had made idli for dinner :9 So, amma and appa would be leaving for Sg. Siput in a while. We'll be going to grandma's house as I've still got some unfinished work for college tomorrow.
Got to get ready now. bYe!!

Another HAPPY moment!! :D
Oct 15, 2009
Today's Highlights!
- 9am classes were cancelled so followed amma around to get some errands done. Happy to see grandma after a while.
- Gently reminded by life's lessons that when you feel beautiful inside, you naturally glow on the outside.
- Witnessed a mini accident - watched a man fall off his bike. Don't know how it happened. For a moment, I thought that his head got disattached from his body! I saw his helmet roll across the road - I imagined the worst. Many stopped to help. Caring people indeed.
- Noticed that Greentown Business Centre has many 'No Entry' signs. Rather inconvenient.
- Had a rather interesting conversation with my lecturer.
- Shared murukku and atchu murukku with my lecturers and fellow A-levels friends. Sharing is caring! Didn't make them myself though :p
- Got a taste of free cookies - we were the only ones left in the restaurant. Satisfying!
- Put the creative part of me to work - used chalk to decorate our bulletin board at college. Fun, especially when you have friends right by your side to join in.
- Caught up with the latest college gossip. Apparently, my classmates and I are pretty left behind hehe Good laughs! Least expected source of information :p
- Terrible migraine. Ear ache, felt like vomiting. Grandma had Panadol. Took them. Came home. Had a good shower. It slowly subsided.
- Helped paati hit a nail into the table side so that she could hang a cloth/curtain around it, serving as a little cupboard below.
- Watched 'Seventeen Again' with sis on Youtube. No, not the one with Zac Efron in it. This was about a girl's divorced grandparents turning 17. Pretty cool.
- Got a call from appa to check on bro's maths. Exams coming up for him and I've got to make sure he does his best.
Right. I guess that should do it. Got to go. Duty calls!

Thaali meal
Well, it is an Indian cuisine - rice served along with other dishes of your choice such as rasam, thairu (yogurt), puli (pickle), curry, etc. It is all served in one big plate or tray with the dishes in smaller trays around the rice. I had my first go at Kalai's Curry House. Here is a review by IpohChai.com - not about the meal but the restaurant itself.
Married Indian women have a long standing tradition of tying the 'thaali' around their neck. It is a yellow string that is tied by the husband on the day of their wedding. The thaali has numerous designs depending on the customs of the groom's family. The various dishes offered in a thaali meal reflect the different ornaments strung on the thaali, hence the name given to the meal.
Hope that whets your appetite to try out this dish. May I warn you, attempt with an empty stomach :)

Justice Must Be Done!
It has been more than 4 months now. So much has happened.
1. Play - 4, 5th July
The Teenage Black Box was awesome. A wonderful experience. Sis and I blogged about it here and uploaded videos, too.
2. Musical Variety Show - 25th July
Conducted by the Anderson Premier Military Band. Attended with sis, her friend, her bro, n my bro :) Wonderful showcase of talent.
3. MSLS '09 - 8th, 9th August
Found out about the Malaysian Student Leaders Summit after the registration was closed. A friend encouraged me to keep trying. I got in! Thought provoking. Met many ambitious young people. Definitely worth my time.
5. Nanban event - 6th June
An evening with the Prime Minister. Held in Nikko Hotel. Awarded certificate for my achievement in SPM. Got to know many other students. Young people who have come a long way. Their proud parents. It was amazing. Thanks to my uncle who drove my friend, her mother and me back and forth.
6. School Prize-giving - 1 July
Memories of school life flooded in. It was great to meet up with some of my friends. Felt honoured to be up on stage, receiving those awards for (again!) my achievement in SPM. Loved the little 'photo session' my friends and I had after the event.
7. Family get-together - 26 Sept
Relatives from US were down. Got to see my little cousin for the first time ^^) Prepared a slide show that took us months to complete for the little gathering. Happiness :))) Whole family was invited for dinner later on. Was introduced to 'thaali' meal. Good food.
8. BIRTHDAY - 17 Sept
A very meaningful day. Didn't do anything extravagant. I was content.
- Earlier, amma had bought me a cake to share with my classmates. Didn't have a lighter so had to blow an invisible candle!
- Atthai got my friends and I lunch - didn't want the same mamak food again. Managed to sneak up the food to the classroom ;p Wonderful chicken rice.
- Sis bought me this beautiful purple blouse :) Wore it the whole of that day.
- Had dinner - bread with potato curry hehe (it sounded fancier on the menu) - with my grandaunt who shared the same birthday. She made me pudding and custard. Shared it with my friends. Delicious!
- Dropped by my grandparents' house to visit chittappa, chitti and the little guy who had just arrived from US.
- Had so many warm wishes, calls and gifts. Love you guys :) Each and every one of you made my day.
The above are just a few highlights. Dear blog, I know that my schedule is more packed now. I many not be able to blog as often but, I will try. Take care. I will return!!

unexpected
MOVIE DAY- I was frustrated about it in my earlier post. Guess what? THINGS DIDN'T TURN OUT THE WAY I EXPECTED THEM to be. One of them came early and we just sat in the living room, talking and reminiscing while waiting for my other friend. She did turn up eventually but I thought that it was a bit too LATE to start a MOVIE coz there wasn't enough time. We agreed and just sat down chit-chatting away...it was something I needed. To talk to familiar faces about familiar things....Have been lots of CHANGES lately that I didn't realise it was what I NEEDED!
QUALITY time spent together..won't FORGET it.
FAMILY- Haven't seen many of my cousins lately. Got the opportunity when we attended 3 weddings in 2 weeks! The first one, a MALAY wedding...it was AWESOME...something DIFFERENT..now I know why they call the bride n groom 'raja sehari' in Malay. They were TREATED like ROYALTY!
Then, another 2 weddings yesterday, at the same time. So, we attended one couple's wedding and another's DINNER RECEPTION. Loved it! After that, we cousins were taken out for a TREAT by our uncle. ENJOYED myself...exchanging stories and what not hehe
GROWING UP- This may be the TOUGHEST part. Realised how much all of us are growing and moving on in life when I met up with my cousins during those weddings. My lil cousin bros n my own bro aren't so LITTLE anymore. In fact, sis n I looked like the thangachis there. Our YOUNG uncles and aunts who I used to look up to whenever we needed some FUN, are also MOVING ON- getting married, having children...suddenly just HIT ME SMACK in the face. We are all moving in that DIRECTION, and it is pretty SCARY if u ask me. We're not so little anymore. How TIME FLIES!!!
So, GROWING UP- got to EMBRACE it and not fear it. CHERISH every MOMENT of the present. It is truly a GIFT. FAMILY, FRIENDS, they will be where u want them to be- in our HEARTS. Just got to know where to LOOK :)
Alright then, DUTY CALLS :D
May 24, 2009
photos for an earlier post
Plus spaghetti..with delicious sauce- just one of atthai's specialties...and fruits...and lots of punch specially made by amma :) mmm tasty...

dying excitement...
From the top, remember the earlier entry about lepaking at home to watch a movie? Am not so EXCITED about it anymore. One of them can't make it, the other hasn't confirmed, and now we have to cut it short coz something came up.
CHALLENGES...we couldn't have it in the evening coz it was clashing with my DANCE classes and the tonnes of WEDDING receptions piled up for the month. Plus, I did have a lot of breaks throughout this week. CLASSES were cancelled, postponed, etc. At first, it was EXCITING to have classes CANCELLED. Well, it isn't anymore. You get to do EVERYTHING that you want to and that was the break I needed. Now that that phase is OVER, I feel like hitting the BOOKS and am not in the mood for a MOVIE.
Still, don't want to DISAPPOINT the other 2 who have agreed to come after a week of ANTICIPATION. Not sure when I'll have another OPPORTUNITY to meet up with them again...yup, they'll be LEAVING, too. *sigh*
FRIENDS..they're all leaving. Suddenly, everyone's BLOGS, FB STATS, etc. hv been filled with GOODBYE WISHES! - Leaving town, or the country...it's still a MAJOR shift in our lives. The memories keep FLOODING IN...SCHOOL seems like the BEST place to be....with a few EXCEPTIONS hehehe
With all the WEDDING receptions coming up, amma decided to get me a NEW suit. It was a SIMPLE one, just the way I like it. Then, when I put it on, realised that there was a RUST stain on the BACK of it! Now, amma has to go and get it CHANGED...oh, the FRUSTRATION!
Even MERLIN seems a lot less EVENTFUL. Ahhhhh!!! It's just a PHASE. It'll pass. Maybe I do need that MOVIE DAY with my BUDDIES tomorrow =)
May 16, 2009
another week...
Welcome to the latest episode of 'This Week In My Life' starring me, myself and I.
FACEBOOK- not so addicted to it anymore....yes!!! I can actually leave the computer whenever I want to and not glance at it at different angles everytime I PASS BY!!! I'M FREE...almost :p
Still, am CONVINCING more and more of my friends to join in...just so I know that they're in reach...a click away...that I'm still keeping in touch with them...
I've observed people who say that they regret not getting that phone number or email...or stopping by for 5 minutes...or some even, attending so n so's FUNERAL...which can be disheartening...wouldn't want to be in that MISERABLE state...
I read a quote ending like this: "The things we regret the most is the WORDS UNSAID and THINGS NOT DONE.." or something like that...still u get the message...it's TRUE...
Nowadays, I feel like I shouldn't miss an opportunity...by saying IT'LL COME AGAIN...or NEXT TIME I'LL DO IT...got to act there and then..no point feeling SHY or SCARED...it's BETTER that, than feeling that SOUL-EATING REGRET...
FRIENDS- It's a CRUCIAL POINT right now for many of them. Choosing a career path ain't that EASY...Some are facing DISAPPOINTMENTS as rejection letters pile in while others are spinning in CONFUSION as the offer letters fill their rooms...haha what a contradictory scenario...
Making important DECISIONS is challenging. Not to mention the EXPECTATIONS many of them have to put up with. After that, it's all about ADAPTING to a new ENVIRONMENT. Some have left the COUNTRY, most of them- their COMFORT ZONE.
I'm surprised at how these girls (and boys) manage it. REMARKABLE! It's one thing to do whatever it takes when u r in the situation but, truly an AMAZING feat. AMBITIOUS young people. Past couple of months, I've got to know MANY young people and they were KIND enough to SHARE their ASPIRATIONS with me. I'm definitely more than IMPRESSED by some. PERSEVERANCE...a HANDFUL are really going ALL OUT to achieve their goals no matter what the OBSTACLES!
RELAX- My lecturer defined it as 'A CHANGE IN ACTIVITY.' Not necessarily less STRESSFUL but surely REJUVENATING. Repeating the MUNDANE routine of going to COLLEGE, completing HOMEWORK, STUDYing, FACEBOOKing, EMAILing,...ok maybe not so mundane but after a while, even the most enjoyable stuff can BORE u... it can DRIVE u mad.
So, I planned to have a GIRLS NITE OUT (or day haha). At first, I was casually msging my fren when I thought that maybe we should all meet one more time before everyone leaves. Idea popped up at abt 11pm. Unfortunately, she said that she couldn't make it. Quickly I came up with another idea. Why don't we have it in her place? Instead of parading around the SAME MALL. She AGREED n we started making PLANS. Others are not sure yet but am personally EXCITED about it!
Not to mention that play REHEARSALS were cancelled today coz S had come down with the flu, classes for this Tuesday has been POSTPONED, MORAL for next week has been cancelled coz the INTERNAL programme students are in for a TEST, SEASON FINALE OF MERLIN is coming up this FRIDAY, AND I DON'T HAVE THE pre-MONDAY BLUES!!!!
Alright then, think that is all we have time for today. Don't forget to tune in for another REFRESHING episode.
CHEERS!!! =)

extra holidays... great or not?
instead, i end up updating myself more on EMAILS and currently FACEBOOK!!! have i mentioned that it is an ADDICTION????
yesterday, LABOUR'S DAY!!! told myself the day before, i'm gonna use the opportunity WISELY!!! yeah, so much for that. i spent the day watching tv, going online, didn't even practise my SCRIPT for the PLAY!!! S called, said that she wants to bring everyone together tomorrow coz' many ponteng practices... and she wants to see hw we're working in our groups... she's ADDING THE HOURS!!!!
not to mention, i just started BHARATHANAATIYEM classes today!!! i'll be having classes saturdays and sundays. so, i'll hv to deal with DRAMA practices in the mornings and DANCE classes in the evenings on Sundays... no more FREE time on sundays!!! a CHALLENGE it is...
then again, what can u say when u just don't have the mood to bury urself into BOOKS? it's ok, that's what some may say... take a break... but what if that BREAK was prolonged? quite a lot like what's happening NOW!!! ahhhhh....
gotta WAKE UP EARLY tomorrow, practise the SCRIPT, run through the BOOKS, and do what's necessary... I WILL DO IT. I KNOW I CAN!!!! I HAVE TO or else.....

FOOD!
2. Realised the topic on food never gets OUTDATED.
3. One thing in COMMON some of my lecturers have is the knowledge of best food around.
4. Always makes us HAPPY!
5. Also makes us GUILTY.
6. We say it's okey to INDULGE once in a while.
7. We successfully coax ourself with that EXCUSE.
8. Then, look at an old outfit and say "I used to fit into this."
9. Somebody comes up with a CHOCOLATE bar and we take it... complaining that we'll put on those extra pounds!
10. Don't we all just LOVE it anyway :)
This Week in My Life...
2. Tomorrow is a HOLIDAY. Yehhhh!!!!! Labour's Day.
3. Got a rehearsal for the PLAY with my new partner. She's a dancer!
4. Changed the BLOG template. Just needed a change :)
5. Attended a tea party at grandparents' house which turned into dinner and turned in late. Grandparents' WEDDING ANNIVERSARY. Tiredness lingered for 2 days...
6. WEDDINGS. Lots of people getting married this month. Interesting wedding cards, too. Love it that they're not following the traditional layout.
7. Created a QUIZ about 'how well do you know me' on Facebook. Everyone is welcomed to join in the fun. Note: Some answers may not be accurate as I have more than 1 answer for some. Try your luck anyway hehe :P
8. Need to get new SOCKS. The ones I'm using are worn out.
9. Got to update notes for certain subjects. Love studying them. Continuous effort. Gives me satisfaction.
10. DRIVING around nearby. Getting used to the big car. Still needs practice.

Football Mania!!
1. Facebook
Quizzes, comments, yeah, ppl r voicing out and I've no idea what they're talking abt!
2. Ronaldo
Only reason I know him is coz Losh talks about him ever so much. She even made a speech on stage ''LIVE" about her life in the future as Mrs. Ronaldo. She knows EVERYTHING about him, maybe even more than he knows himself *giggles*
3. Dreams
My cousin bro is so into football, he collects cards, etc. He plays football every week and just loves the game. Says that he wants to play in a national team. BIG dreams, indeed! When his mother wants to punish him, she would just stop him from playing that week and that is good enough!
4. Hobby
My uncle plays often. The other day, he said that he'd even created his signature move which he's still working on. More of a PASSION for the game, I believe.
5. Restaurants
Nowadays, they come equipped with a mini tv in so that people come flooding in just to watch the game... and order something while at it. You will never find people more unified when watching a game.... and unless you are used to people shouting at unexpected intervals, you may want to consider a different location.
6. Distraction
A major one it is. Once, we were driving past Tmn DR and I noticed people just pulling up at the side of the road to watch a game. Cars, bikes, bicycles, you name it, they STOPPED to watch!
7. Common game
What really amazes me is the sight I see every evening when we pass by fields. You will not fail to catch a group of boys battling it out, rain or shine. How come I only see boys do that? Never seen a group of girls meeting up to play netball. AMAZING!
8. Hook
I do mean both the role of Capt. Hook and the common fish hook. Football fans are hooked to the game that even if you shouted their name out loud on a speaker, they would not have moved an inch. You just can't grab their attention and that's why the name Capt. Hook for the game. It grabs them and never lets go.
So, football... what can I say? A group of guys running around one ball? Or something more? They fill up the newspapers every morning, radio programmes, blogs, magazines and straight into the HEARTS of people.
The work, perseverance, exhaustion, pressure... there is a lot of sweat and tears behind it. I may not be a part of this MANIA but, it was good enough to make me BLOG about it right? I gave it a thought. What an IMPACT!

Preparing for A-levels
1. Get minimum one file for each subject and fill them up with papers.
2. Remember, books are expensive so, save up for those, too.
3. There is no particular book for each subject although there are endorsed texts which can be found in www.cie.org.uk
4. Books published by Cambridge University Press are encouraged to be bought.
5. Be sure to do a lot of reading and updating of notes from time to time.
6. There will be more flexibility in time now, so manage your time wisely.
7. Surf the net for extra resources. Relevant sites are listed in the above mentioned site.
8. Maximise class time. Revise and read ahead of class. Ask questions and note down important points along the way.
9. Don't rely on lecturers' notes only. Think outside the box. Read relevant books to widen perspective and increase depth in the subject.
10. Apply that knowledge into your daily life. See the world in a whole new light. Make sense of what you learn by running through it with examples of your surroundings.
other stuff ~
Anyway, just had a phone call from one of my friends from secondary school. I miss you, Gurpreet and all the fun we had :) ( She was the Head Prefect, by the way) Yes, she was garang when she had to be :)
Sis says that I should pay people when I write about them. She also says that I don't love her when I refuse to teach her homework. I mean, I can't teach her everything. She's got to learn and can't expect me to teach her word for word (which she demands of me at times).
Oh yeah, going back to Gurpreet. She was asking me how A-levels is. She had just gotten a call of acceptance for one of the colleges she applied for. Congrats, girl! Just the other day, Jasmine emailed me asking the same thing. I gave her a word of caution though, since my pointers would mainly refer to the subjects I'm doing and not the Science subjects she intends to take. So, you may have guessed it by now. My next post: Pointers to prepare for A-levels :)
I suddenly recalled the cartoon, 'The Wild Thornberrys,' today when having breakfast. The show was about a girl who could talk to animals. Her parents did documentaries so, the girl, Eliza, and her sister followed their parents everywhere they went in their 'part house part vehicle' (can't recall what you call it). Used to imagine how great it would be to travel around and meet new people of different cultures while staying close to nature. Of course, it would have been cooler if I could talk to animals, too :p

Like I said, what a week!
Have I mentioned how much sis, bro and I have become hooked to Merlin? Since we can't watch TV on school nights, we watch the repeats on Fridays. Today, sis and bro turned in early because both of them have programmes on tomorrow. As for me, got to do lots of reading and complete my work. Sis has marching competition and bro has poem recital comp. in the same school. Good luck, guys!
As for college, my friend and I had shuffled around our timetable (with the help of our ever understanding lecturers) to accommodate Moral, hoping that we could cross out 1 subject for the next semester and focus on Pengajian Malaysia. Don't get me started on those 2 subjects!!!
So, at about 2.30pm, we walked into a room full of students (about 30+) and noticed that the teacher was handing out their previous assignments (Note: the subject was not in our timetable initially and we were entering a class which had already commenced a few weeks before). I informed the teacher and we took a seat on a chair alongside a table that we had to bring in ourselves. Both my friend and I were brewing inside as the class was packed and the stream of students flowing in hadn't ceased just yet. Students were scrambling around looking for a suitable way to position their tables and chairs so that it won't hinder the walkway.
I suggested to my friend that we should just pull ourselves out of the class. She said that we may want to wait until break time so that we could talk to the teacher about it. I gave it a thought and instinctively got up, walked to the teacher's table and told her that the both of us will join her class next semester. Phew! As soon as she agreed, I picked up my bag and walked out of the class feeling satisfied that I spoke my mind out and laid firm what I wanted. What a moment!

Ways to get Happy :D
No.3 has proven to work for me. There are those times when I just don't know what's bothering me. During one of those times, my sister introduced me to the chatting world. Didn't like the idea of chatting with a complete stranger after watching all those movies about the dangers of the Cyber World. Anyway, she just clicked her way around and before I knew it, I was chatting with a guy from India. Honestly, it did make me feel a bit better. Just chatted about simple stuff like movies and all. So, that's a good tip.
No.4 is a really helpful point. Sometimes, procrastination can hit you hard for various reasons. A good tip is to relax, sit down and plan it all out. Always makes me feel better :) It doesn't end there. Make it a point to follow what you have planned, keeping in mind that you will feel much better. In fact, you can already feel it when you have started!
No.8 hmmm.... act happy. Not that easy if you ask me. In fact, doing so can sometimes make you more irritable. I would suggest watching a sitcom instead :)
No.9 is a yes but, it works in a different way for me. I think more about 'doing' rather than 'learning.' Of course, the learning process is continous during that time. I like to think about projects that I could do like volunteering, picking up something new, continue something that I've left off, etc. It gets me excited.
For related articles, do check out the links in the article as well. Have a Happy Day :)

What a week!
I slept at 8.30 yesterday. Why?
Woke up at 4am yesterday. Why?
Hadn't done homework. Why?
Spent my weekend in grandparents' house. Why?
Celebrated bro's and cousin's bday party and it was FUN!!!!
We had about 18 boys (cousins and neighbours) running around the house and everyone pitched in for the food. Both babies were such a delight. The party was on Saturday from afternoon right up to night. We continued the following day until night, again. I'm trying to upload the photos but something's wrong. Will try again later :)

Saturdays....
Nowadays, I can even forget about my weekends. I loved Fridays because the feeling that the following day is going to be my 'cartoon day' was ever so exciting. Also, my Fridays were spent 'very wisely' watching cartoon right after school on NTV7. Sad they don't have that now :(
Anyway, now, if I don't use my time to finish my work during the weekends, teruk lah later 'coz I'll be having a tough time throughout the week!!!! Today, I woke up running the to-do-list in my head. Let's see:
1. Maths homework
2. Accounts homework
3. Update notes for Law
4. Help prepare for bro's surprise bday party
5. Prepare speech for tomorrow's event
6. Run through my lines for the play
7. Clear up the mess on my table
and some other stuff which is better left unsaid.
That's it :) .... for now :)

Happy Birthday
Haaaa.... Amma bought KFC for lunch. Sister and I wanted (really, really wanted) to get him something but, isk isk :( we didn't and feeling kinda bumped about that. I mean, he just turned 13 and it was just like any other day.
He got up late (it's a Sunday, by the way), relaxed a little, TV for a while, practised piano, did his daily exercise, went for Taekwon-do class and now, getting ready to go to bed. Where is the fun????
Anyway, we are planning to throw a party for my cousin and him next week. Oh, and amma got him this Spongebob balloon that floats in the air (helium-filled, yes) and it's soooo cute coz the guy who was selling it tied a shell at the end of the string. So, it looks as if it is standing beside you straight up!
So, happy birthday dear brother. All the best as you move into your teenage life. We'll be here for you, always.
Trying a hand in performing arts
Today, I attended the first practice for the short play I'm going to be in. Something new for me. Before that, I was supposed to memorise about 8 pages of script within 3 weeks. At first, what with all the excitement, I managed to go up to 3 pages. Then, the procrastination factor kicked in and I delayed it right up to today. Yes, today. I woke up bright and early and started to gush down 5 pages of lines within 1 hour. Impressive, right?
Anyway, I was to do this play with a guy. Yup, only two of us. I didn't call him to check on our progress or even attempt a practice session before meeting up with the coordinator today. I know, I hang my head in shame :(
So, we reached there at 9.30am, half an hour before practice and had to wait outside as the doors were all locked. We waited and waited and I was only hoping that he'd show up early so that we could have a short practice run. When our coordinator finally arrived, she told me that he had pulled out of the play. Shocking!
I was aware that he had mentioned about not being able to do the play but, didn't think it was this soon. She went on to tell me that a new girl will be joining and she'd be my partner. Yes, they changed the gender of the character!
Then, we went on to practise the script. Being the newbie (I have no prior knowledge about acting in plays), we had to go line by line and since my character is deceitful and conniving, it wasn't that easy. I had to know how to manipulate people (expressing myself right), compliment with an ulterior motive in mind, etc. all at the same time. My coordinator did mention that this was one of the tougher plays and I was too trusting (read: innocent) to play the 'evil' character.
Anyway, it was definitely a new experience and I have to pick up fast. Am enjoying it and can't wait for the next session. And to meet my new partner :)

Another brilliant idea! (ehem)
Footsteps: Fancy Biology?
I went on to do STPM as I did not know what to do. Along the way, I realized that I was good in Biology, therefore I applied to USM to do a major in Biotechnology after my STPM. When I got into USM, I realized that I couldn't do Biotech as I was in the Pure Science program, therefore I opted to major in Microbiology. I had no regrets till now for opting Microbiology, as it made me appreciate and learn Science better. The fact that viruses could cause cancer by disrupting the normal cell cycle in the body, sparked my interest in Cancer Biology.
There was no turning back after that, my interest in cancer biology just grew and decided that was what I wanted to do. As Cancer Biology was not offered in Malaysia, I had to do it at the University of Nottingham in UK. I had to find a niche within the cancer biology field for myself and I was very interested in the physiological death machanism in the body termed Apoptosis.
Upon returning to Malaysia in 2006, I applied for the Malaysian Government Scholarship in 2007, so that I could do a intense research on apoptosis and cancer. I worked for the Nilai Cancer Hospital and the Institute for Medical Research in between. With God's grace I was awarded the scholarship one year after my application and I am where I am now.
My PhD project is to look at the Apoptosis Pathway in the Drug Resistance and Pathogenesis of Melanoma. Although its a lot of hard work, I enjoy carrying out the project. Science gives me a lot of satisfaction and joy.
Thanks for letting me add this into my blog, akka. All the best for the PhD project.

First day in college
Walked upstairs to settle some stuff at the office and at sharp 11am, reached my classroom. My classmate was already there. Apparently, she had been sitting there alone for the past half an hour. Took a seat beside her then, decided to move right to the front (with her of course).
Teacher arrived and we were briefed about the subject - Law: how many papers, time allocation, career options, yadeyadeyade... He answered all our questions, even ones posed about himself. Sporting.
After clearing our doubts on the subject and realised that there was more than an hour left for class, our lecturer decided to give us some personal advice on the selection of food and restaurants around the area, recommending some and totally rejecting others. He even gave price comparisons and recommended the Mee Hoon Tom Yam dish in Nijam restaurant (I think) for those gloomy days when you are feeling unwell. What a lecturer! Reminded me of Mr. Vicky in F2 & 3 tuition.
Amma fetched me and we went to experiment the food in Giant (which is nearby and was on the no-no list of the lecturer). We had Rojak Pasembur with longan drink (both were pretty good by the way) although the longan didn't have its usual colour.
Guess that's about it. For today.

Induction programme today!
Then, the Principal, who is also my course leader, cheerfully spoke about stuff that we needed to know. Why didn't anyone notice that the air-cond was so high? Next, we were lectured on the payments and exams by others. Felt ...brrrr... really cold.
The fun part, we were taken on a mini-tour around the area. Our guide was speaking so softly, no one heard anything she said. We just looked like a herd of animals moving around in a narrow passageway. The good part, we were shown the Art Gallery, furnished with works of the Art and Design students.
After that, we were to meet our respective course leaders. Imagine the shock on my face when I got to know that only two of us were in the same course! Our course leader asked us if it was alright to be in such a small class. What were we to say? No, we want a bigger class or we're leaving? Anyway, I started to like the idea of being in a mini class. Full attention from the lecturers, right? Also, we were shown to our classroom which we could fully utilise. Meaning, we could use the class whenever we wanted! Wow!!! (Or at least that's what I think he meant)
The whole thing was quite fun although there were some minus points to it (which I'd rather not mention). The best part, I would say, is not having to go for a 7am-2pm week of classes anymore. We were advised to use that time wisely but it is still MY time. I could do whatever I wanted...hahhahahaha. No, just kidding, I'm not that bad. Or evil.
Really hope that everything turns out all right. Good lecturers, friends and a simple conscience that will keep me on track.

How to Study Physics for SPM?
Firstly, Physics is very different compared to the other subjects. Physics is one of the toughest Science subjects for many people. Physics is more to the Maths side as it is mostly calculations, formulaes and principles.. Biology is 100% memorising, Chemistry is 50% calculation, 50% memorising, Physics on the other hand is 100% calculation and formulaes. The study of Physics is very deep and it involves a lot of techincal details: heat, electricity, electronics and so forth. Every minor detail is important and that makes the subject complex and sometimes even tedious. Nevertheless, once mastered, Physics is very useful for survival purposes in our daily life.
One very important thing in Physics is understannding. You must understand what you are learning, not just memorise for the sake of exam. Physics is actually an easy subject to study. All you must know are the formulaes and principles involved.. What usually happens is the teacher will twist the questions and asked them from different angles. That is when it becomes tough. What you must remember is the basic pronciples involved. No matter how tough the question is, in the end, it will always go back to the basic principles.
I would recommend a good revision book for this subject as the school textbook alone is not enough to score. Pay attention in class and ask questions whwnever you don't understand. Do not be scared or shy to question your teachers as it is necessary for you to know in detail about Physics. For eg:
Where did the formulaes come from, how are they derived, how are the variables involved connected to each other, conversion of units and many more.
Master your calculations and make sure you choose the right formulaes for each question. This can be a problem sometimes. Physics is not a mugging subject, you cannot simply study it by the book. You must attempt questions from workbooks and do a lot of exercises. Only then you will be exposed to a wide range of different ways questions can be asked. Hence, you will be able to answer various types oy questions no matter how tough they may seem.
Interest plays a vital role in scoring in this subject. You must show keen interest in studying Physics. Most people dislike the subject as it is far more complicating then the other Science subjects. Therefore, they make no effort to master the subject.
Finally, try attempting the past year questions for Physics. Analyse the questions and topics that have come out in the previous years. SPM questions are always very similar, so chances of the same type of questions coming out every year is very high. Please take note, same type of questions, not same questions. Make sure that you are able to do all the past year questions. If so, you will not have a problem during the actual exam.
It is very important for you to understand in Physics. You MUST know what you are studying. Only then will you be able to score in the subject. Physics is not a difficult subject. I feel that it is much easier than Biology and Chemistry, bur it requires a lot of patience, interest and understanding.
NEXT, I asked her what type of reference books she would recommend. Also asked why she was very interested in the subject.
I don't know what are the reference books they have nowadays for Physics but I would recommend either Success or Focus. I found both quite good. But you can also check out the others that are there now.
I was always interested in tools and mechanical stuff ever since I was small. I love playing with my father's gadgets even now and I suppose that's why I love Physics. This is something that has to come from within I guess.
So, there you have it. Feel free to add on to the above mentioned points. One question for all of you out there, how do you spark an interest in Physics?

He's married!

I can drive now!
Today, I earned my right to be on the road, on the driver's seat this time. After 12 hours of driving practice, I finally qualified for the JPJ test.
Met some of my school friends and friends that I've come to know by attending classes in the driving school.
We were required to be there at 8.15am. Since my parents had to go out, I was dropped there at 7.30am. Already, there were people waiting. When the clerks had arrived, I asked one of the candidate's father if we should register or something. He wasn't sure. So, I boldly walked up to the desk to enquire and I was registered first! Lucky me, candidate No. 1! Later, I realised how lucky I really was.
The officers were running a bit late so, I got to drive the car up to the hill and wait. When I was there, the person-in-charge asked me to off the engine and I was half-way up the hill. While waiting, I watched as another 11 candidates pulled up behind me.
Then, the officer came - fierce as ever. 'Naik' (climb), he said. I went up and looked out. I was not really satisfied when I had stopped but he was. I passed! I drove down the hill to park. Again, I had to wait for all 11 to finish before the same officer tested me for the 2nd test. This time, it was alright.
The funny part is I had a final class one day before my SPM results. Sub-consciously worried, I had made all the possible mistakes and this helped me today because I was able to focus and note any potential mistakes. Yeh! Towards the end of that class, I was to do my final parking. I was doing fine when I saw amma parked a bit further. Normally, amma would come in a bit later but today, amma was early. Excited, I forgot to brake and headed straight for the 'tiang' (pole)! My instructor had to make an emergency brake as we were inches away from it.
Next, it was time to drive on the road. I loved it although one part really shook me. I was on a straight road with not many cars, driving on 4th gear. Suddenly, a car crossed the road and came right in front of me. I tried to break slowly, didn't work, I changed gears, 3...2... My mind was racing, figuring out what to do. I was barely inches away. The officer quickly stepped on his break and the car stopped. That was close. I could have just met with an accident! However, am glad that I am here to say, don't take anything for granted.
So, what else? I passed the test and am happy. Still, the shock from yesterday (my results) was able to balance today's excitement. Believe me, I am glad that it all didn't turn out the way I expected it to be. Definitely a wonderful experience.

My SPM results experience
I was as cool as a cucumber... 2 days ago. Yesterday, I went for my final 2 hours of driving class and couldn't pay attention - I was sub-consciously worried. Today, I tried to keep a cool head before going to school; definitely a lot calmer compared to the previous years, but little did I expect it to be the most shocking of all.
I marched into the school compound at 10am, armed with my family and their support, happy to see my friends. We were told that the results will only be out at 10.30am. So, we waited; a long, tormenting half an hour eased with small conversations. We also got to know that 3 students in our school had scored straight A1s.
When my teacher had taken her seat, indicating that the results were available, students crowded around the table, keeping a distance as well. I slowly moved to the front, but turned back; I was not ready.
After a while, we heard a scream of joy. It was Prasana, one of the school's top scorers who is also now a straight As student - 10 to be exact. Jasmine also got her results - no doubt that she was also in the list, proving herself time and again. The third one? We had our speculations. Much later, we got to know that it was Kavitha, an equally brilliant student. All three of them had scored 10A1s. Congrats, guys.
Next, I realised that it was time I went to collect mine. I sat down, heart beating faster than ever, as I waited for the teachers to pull out my slip. They started counting. It clicked to me that I could not have gotten straight As if they were counting. The small shock mellowed down fast. After that, I saw the teacher write on a list beside my name, 10 A1s, 1 A2.
Something was amiss. I voiced out my concern. I had taken 12 subjects. The second shock - I got 1 B3. I felt my whole world come to a halt; couldn't hear anything, mind was totally blank. I was feeling down. Coming out of it a little, I asked which subject was it. The teacher glanced at my slip and asked me if I really wanted to know. I didn't know what to say. My head was still spinning. Amma said that at that time, the teacher was talking to me, but honestly I can't remember.
Finally, I picked myself up and asked for the slip. I screened it carefully, eyeing for the B3. What a shock - BIOLOGY!!! Next, I looked for the A2. Shocked, yet again - MORAL!!! I laughed it out, but inside it was piercing me through and through. Amma said that I had an array of expressions before I returned to my normal self.
I stayed on in school to spend time with some of my friends right up to afternoon. Wow, what a day!
Summary:
A1s: Malay, English and 1119, Tamil, Tamil lit., Maths, Additional Maths, Chemistry, Physics, English for Science and Technology (EST), Sejarah (History)
A2: Moral
B3: Biology
Just a note of appreciation: Thank you to amma and appa, my siblings, family and friends, school and tuition teachers, your support means so much to me.

How to Study English for SPM?
2. Read
3. Read
4. Take note of spelling and grammatical errors (You can grab some tips from the BM section in my earlier post)
eg: difference between 'effect' and 'affect'
5. Read
6. Always make it a point to upgrade your standard of writing.
7. When reading, take note of easy yet effective sentences.
eg: The row of houses burnt down in a fire.
The row of houses were razed to the ground.
8. Check out this site, Daily Writing Tips, for correct usage of vocabulary, etc.-very informative
9. Good English Essays is an essay writing guide blog, includes analysis of past year questions
10. Speak English and get people to correct you. Watch English programmes, listen to English radio channels, do lots and lots of practice.
As for the English Literature component:
1. Be sure to read everything: novel, short stories and poems
2. Understand in detail, especially poems (line by line)
3. Make notes on themes, characters, moral values by connecting them to the story.
Eg: In 'The Necklace,' Mathilde wants a beautiful necklace to match her new gown that was bought from her husband's savings.
Theme: Greed
Character & characteristic: Mathilde; greedy
Moral value: We should not be greedy / We should be grateful for what we have.
4. When writing an essay based on the novel, be sure to add in feelings, not only facts.
Eg: In 'The Pearl,' Kino beats up his wife for trying to throw away the pearl.
Sample question: Which character do you admire?
Sample answer: I admire Juana [answers the question] for her loyalty [reason] towards her husband. I take my hat off [feelings] for Juana as she still protects and cares for her husband even after he beats her up [explanation].

How to Study BM for SPM?
The book was divided into 4: The front page, the back page, the center page moving to the right and the center page moving to the left.
1. The front page, moving in the direction that we normally write, is used to write grammar rules eg: 'ia' can only be used for humans and not animals or objects. I also list down words that are very similar in meaning, together with their specific definitions, so that it will be easy for me to differentiate eg: memikul, mengusung, membimbit, menjulang... (it all means 'carry' but are used for different purposes).
2. The last page, moving to the front, is listed with proverbs (peribahasa) that I come across during activites or exercises. You may have a kamus peribahasa but when you find a proverb that is not listed in the dictionary, the best thing to do is note it. Be sure to note all the proverbs used in the textbooks.
3. The center page, moving to the right, is used to list down quotations and phrases/sentences that have lots of flowery words eg: ...menopang dagu dan menuding jari.... I also use it to note recently coined terms like modal insan kelas pertama or other words that can replace common ones eg: keluarga - kulawangsa.
4. The center page, moving to the left, I write about common and current issues in point form.
Eg: Topik - Pencemaran air, Punca, Kesan, Langkah, berita terbaru, contoh, kementerian...
These may help in your collection of notes:
1. Cikgu Tan C L's blog - lots of points, resources - found this really helpful
2. Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka - the official site has links to many other useful ones including a Malay thesaurus and a reference for 'sports language' (bahasa sukan).
3. Dewan Siswa and Dewan Majalah - my school library had subscribed this magazines and they were indeed very informative for the essay part with current issues clearly explained.
4. Bahasa Malaysia SPM - everything to do with BM SPM including the KOMponen SAStera
caRtOoNS :p
1. Cardcaptor Sakura
2. Skydancers
3. Ben 10
4. Digimon
5. Pokemon
6. Xiaolin Showdown
7. Danny Phantom
8. Totally Spies
9. Avatar
10. X-Men
11. Little Lulu
12. Rugrats
13. Silver Surfer
I used to watch so many. Will add on to the list when I recall the names.

what's up with form 6?
Joann and I met during a workshop for Malaysian teens called 'Ideal Teen' 4 years ago. We've not met after that but still kept in touch until today. This is what she had to say:
Form 6 is tough for me as we have a lot to study but a limited time.so, time management is very very important.just a slip of mistake, u'll need a long time to correct it. things like extra curriculum, tuitions, assignments, projects, practical experiments, .. all of this is the thing that cause you to have 'Not enough time syndrome'.especially for those who are holding high post in some society such as librarian board, perfectorial board, etcThose who can't manage themselves well, will face 'Depressing syndrome' and their academic result will fall off.Its pretty hard to manage everything in time. You just can't expect things to go on well in your way.for example, u can't expect to have a teacher who teaches you everything tat is written in the syllabus, you have to do it yourself. if we're lucky enough, we get really good teachers. if not, that subject is all your own to manage. This is why people say form6 is tough.
So, what's up with Form 6? You tell me. Would love to hear.

Of Magical Lands & Wizardry Worlds!
Honestly, it's been a while since I've read a book that is so difficult to put down. From the moment I started on the 1st page, it was like a roller-coaster ride bcoz of the string of events that did not bore me out. I dared not to skip a single word, let alone pages. Normally, I would sit up when a novel reaches its climax but not this time. I was hooked from the very beginning.
I picked up the book in curiosity to find out what the craze had been all about. My aunt who was moving, lent us some of her books and this was one of them. I wasn't bothered to search for the first book coz I'd already watched the movie. Now, I might reconsider. What's great is that it didn't cease to bore me out at all.
I remember reading Julia (a Form 5 novel for BM). I was patiently reading the first few pages no matter how boring coz I'd made it a point to finish my Literature component books every year. When it came to the part when Julia met Jun, I was a little annoyed that it just stopped there. There wasn't anything else that seemed interesting so far. So, I skipped pages in search of their names and only read those parts right up to the end! I was satisfied. Then, I returned to page 1, determined to finish the book thoroughly and I did.
There was Narnia by CS Lewis which captivated me for a while. After watching The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, I was fascinated but, it was not until I came across the first book in the school library that I actually started reading fantasy genres. The Magician's Nephew is a prequel to the movie and I was intrigued at how it all connected and how everything made sense (including the lamp post Lucy Pevensie comes across in the movie).
Then, I skipped the 2nd and moved on to The Horse and His Boy. I was excited at first but it all seemed to mellow by the time I was half way through. Yeah, it was basically the adventures of a boy and his talking horse and how they got to Narnia, meeting a girl and her horse who were moving in that direction on the way. I set out to watch the next movie, Prince Caspian, without reading the book and I must say that it was a good one.
Right now, I've put down the novels for a while and am in search of good short stories on the net. Hopefully, a good book comes around soon and will be sure to update from my side.

lifting a bad mood
Some of the things I could relate to was point no. 3 - Hands-on Healing.
I didn't realise it until I read this article. I totally agree that you feel better when you get a hug or give one. Sometimes I would get up feeling irritable or moody and I go in search of a hug. Giving my parents a hug makes me feel all better.
On a different note, I realised that sometimes you can feel bored of visiting old people especially grandparents. All they want is some company and that is why my mother makes it a point to visit them frequently. Then, I developed this thought. What if this was the last time you were going to see them? Wouldn't it be relieving to know that you spent your time with them and gave them a good hug when leaving? From that day on, I'd always give them a hug and spend quality time with them when we are visiting.
Back again, I'd also agree with point 7. Smell the Joy, although I'm not referring to aromatherapy. The smell of good food...mmmm! Forget about the taste, food that smells great always makes my day!!!
Tip: Don't enter a bakery with an empty stomach...You may end up emptying your pockets!
As Dr. Mao would put it, May you live long, live strong, and live happy!
Books for Tamil and Tamil Lit.
These are books I used to do model questions for Tamil and Tamil Literature. The ones here are the 2007 editions. I followed up with the 2008 edition which contains tougher, more challenging questions for the examinations.
These modules are the initiative of the Perak Secondary School Tamil Teachers (Perak Maanile Ideinileippalli Thamizhaasiriyer Mandrem). The modules are published annually.
These are the guides/references I used to study Tamil Literature. The book in blue is for the novel and drama and the red is for the poems.
Consists of detail explanations and notes regarding the books, and model questions & answers.
The writer of the first part (the blue book) is N.Patchaibalan and editor Y.Sahadevan. The 2nd part (red book) is done by S. Seeni Naina Mohd. who also compiled the poems.

The first challenge
Ok, so it's true that sometimes the loads of homework could eat you whole inside out. Or not. I read once of this analogy. Imagine that you are in the sea swimming when the waves are calm. Then, the waves get higher and rougher. If you are calm and observant, you can predict the frequency and nature of the waves and will be able to balance and swim yourself to safety. If you were to panic and not plan your moves, you may drown.
What I'm trying to say is don't drown yourself in homework, don't give up either. Do the work efficiently and gain from it and do not compromise the quality of life in the process.
I used to envy my sister (still do) because somehow her work is always done and she has time to do anything she wants. Her secret is she does it in school. No, not by doing it while the teacher is teaching but would use her in-between-lessons time. I know of some friends who do their work in the library while awaiting their transport back home.
I know of some people who take advantage of Miss Boring Teacher's class to complete assignments. Many have gotten away with it. Their logic is that if you're not going to gain anything by listening, use the time to your advantage!
There are some downsides to this. Firstly, you cannot possibly know what you have missed. There is always something to gain by listening. You may need the extra energy to concentrate but think of it this way. You have covered the topic at least once so you're not totally nil about it.
Speaking of which, this is another challenge!
Back to the topic at hand, for afternoon school students, it is always better to wake up early to start with homework. Do what you can the previous night but be sure to get enough sleep. My brother prefers doing it late into the night. This is alright if you can stand up straight the following day. It is also advisable to find a place to study and get the necessary tools ready.
After school, I would take out all my books and lay them out on the table. I'll immediately pack my bag for the following day. Then, I'll check to see if there is any homework for the following day's lessons. A good tip would be to write down the day's homework as the teacher is giving it so that you don't miss out on anything.
Next, allocate a certain amount of time for each subject based on the amount of work. Now, you can see how much of time you have and need. You will be more focused on finishing it. Once you have completed it, be sure to list down the remaining homework and time allocation.
Sometimes, you may not have the time the following day to follow up on some of the work. So, it is best to finish what you can when you have the time. In short, don't procrastinate!

Tamil and Tamil Lit. SPM (2)
Many of my friends did not want to take up Tamil Literature, saying that Tamil alone was sufficient, too many subjects were a burden and it was a waste of time as you are not going to use it unless your career plans are going in that direction. I've heard it all.
As for Tamil Lit. SPM 2007 onwards, 3 books are to be studied : -
1. A novel - Ponn Vilangu by N. Paarthasaarathy
2. A drama - Kaaviya Naayagi by R.Palanisamy
3. 14 Poems - Kavithei Poongkothu compiled by S. Seeni Naina Mohd.
I'll discuss the formats in a separate post.
1. The novel
The author speaks of a young man in India, how he faces personal challenges and social pressure as he is from a middle-class family, his well-built character and weaknesses (yes, he is not perfect) and how he deals with the people around him.
Frankly, I am not one to just pick up a 600+ page novel. By studying this novel, it not only gave me a change in perspective but I also learnt how to analyse reading materials. The character, the decisions they make, their social settings that define them, etc.
Clearly, the author introduces the different classes in a society and how far people are willing to go to achieve their goals, be it the protagonist or the antagonist. The story line itself has its twists and turns as readers cannot expect anything. A tragic ending it has but reality speaks through the author's work.
Beautiful quotes and critical thinking abilities are showcased. This way, I learnt of scholars (the protagonist is an avid reader of Tamil books), their thoughts and how rich the language is. Every event is something worth thinking. I definitely learnt not to accept things at the surface level but to think and think about why, how, who, etc.
2. The drama
It is set during the reign of the great kings, Seran, Sozhan and Paandiyan. Using a female poet as the centre of his piece, the writer narrates using flashbacks in a post-war time.
By reading this book, it was as if I had been transported back in time, where knights on horses and great kings ruled huge empires and protected their people by all means. Treason, love, loyalty, courage, etc. is clearly brought up, adding to the flavour.
By the time you finish this book, you would have a better glimpse of that era, how great wars were started, kings that rose and fell, ministers who tried to overthrow their king, etc.
The script talks about a young female poet who seeks justice for her husband, the Seran king, after a war. Her plight is brought up to the Sozhan king who had just won the war by stabbing his enemy in the chest but, the sword goes in through and through until it reaches the Seran king's back. It is said that only a coward will have a wound in his back as he would have been trying to escape when he was stabbed. Ashamed that he will be seen as a coward, the Seran king dies in the battlefield after asking his wife to seek justice in his name.
The script showcases alot of traditions, many that are unknown by today's generation, and family ties that hold strong even in stormy weathers.
3. The poems
All 14 poems are written by various poets from India and Malaysia. Using a wide array of themes, the poems have been carefully selected for the students to be exposed to. From loyalty to the country, to the love of the Tamil language, the poems instil values and bring about a different view of the world.
Honestly, some poems are tougher to understand than others. This is where enhancement of vocabulary comes in. By using a simple guide written by S. Seeni Naina Mohd. himself, students will be able to understand the poems word for word.
One of the new things that I've learnt by analysing the poems are the rules used to write them. Who would have thought that so much energy is given to writing each and every word and line. The poems have underlying meanings which are not easily detected by one on the first read, thus the interest to study it evolves.
When I was studying these poems, I used to think how much others were losing out by not knowing all of these. I realised that not many are aware of the properties used to write a traditional poem, a heritage that was not properly passed down. I do still feel grateful for being exposed to the wonders of the language and one day, hope to pass it on.
Tamil and Tamil Lit. SPM - why?
Why should they bother taking those subjects?
Why add on to the burden?
Why even consider?
Having prepared for those examinations, I can now give a clearer answer.
1. If you are a Tamil school student or a student who studied Tamil separately, it will serve as an upgrade to the knowledge in hand.
When you do not study a certain subject over a period of time, you tend to lose touch. Hence, the earlier education wasted.
Looking into the Tamil subject first, from my own experience, I only started studying it properly in Form 3 after leaving primary school. I realised then, how much I'd forgotten the subject in the midst of the hustle and bustle of secondary school. It was a long process to get back on track and am grateful that I did. Yet, I do know that some knowledge acquired during that tender age had slipped off my mind.
In secondary school, the Tamil syllabus goes into more details of grammar, etc. You learn to appreciate the language better when you see that it has so much of satisfaction to offer. In the end, you come to a conclusion that what you have studied is the very basics and there is a whole world to be explored.
2. So, how is that going to help you? I say that knowledge never hurt anyone. If you want to know the language, this is the time. You have the time and resources to help you out. Besides, if Tamil is your mother tongue, wouldn't it be embarassing to know that you cannot speak let alone read and write.
You also have an extra language in hand thus, allowing you to reach out to more people. It's not just about speaking but, knowing the language and the people first-hand.
Tamil is an ancient language that is still spoken widely today. Not to mention the rich culture and wealth of information it carries. By studying the subject, you are also exposed to lifestyles, traditions and the society plus a little history along the way.
3. Is it a burden? I say not at all. While some people can prepare for up to 21 subjects for the SPM, why not take Tamil? It's the discipline and the will to excel that is needed. Challenge yourself, this is the best time.
By adding on to the number of subjects, you can still manage. Time management, etc. will help you to pull the subject into routine. You had to study for 5 or 7 subjects for UPSR, 7 or 8 for the PMR and pull through for SPM by adding on until 9 or 10. We are very flexible so there is no worry there.
4. Some may ask, why go through the extra length just to fit in an extra subject? At the end of secondary school, you have an upper hand compared to your peers. It's a whole different circle - the Tamil literate group.
I'll discuss about Tamil lit. in my next post. Feel free to comment. I want to know your opinions.

what to do for the holidays
1. Pick up an instrument.
One of the many common ones wud b the guitar. Grab 1 (buy or borrow), get into u-tube and start learning. They teach beginners simple notes and even songs...u cud even learn to tune the guitar...
Tip: U cud also venture into song-writing & singing or if u know an instrument so well, upload ur own videos.
2. Move to the groove
If u wanna try sumthin new, why not learn up a few dance moves. If ur into choreography, then u cud pick up different steps here & there, put it all 2gather and just have some fun. Again, u can find this in u-tube. Or u cud just sit back & watch others sweat it out 4 u.
Tip: Whenever a few of my cuzzins r around, we'd pick up steps from each other & incorporate them into our dances. Find out what ur fly & frenz know.
3. Like what u eat?
Get the recipe. It's common for a certain recipe 2 b passed down in families. So, get it. U may not like to cook but getting the recipe is like preservation of heritage. Love ur mother's cooking? She'll b glad 2 hand down the recipe. So, next time when ur missing the aroma, just pull out ur recipe book and cook away.
Tip : U can also do this if ur eating out & find a recipe u like. Many of my relatives' cooking r other ppl's recipe. Some r from other countries they visit.
4. Get back 2 ur roots
Put 2gather ur fly tree..an extended one. Start from the ppl u know and move from there. (Got this idea when I realised I'm not sure who's who in a family function!) Get down names, match them up with photos & find out where they r & what they do. U may b surprised knowing who's related 2 u.
Tip: U cud find lots of putting-together-family-tree ideas from the net. My aunt compiled and created a long directory for our side of the family including bdays, contacts, etc. & emailed it to evry1. She'd also update us whenever there's a change.
5. Learn the culture
Many of us don't practice alot of traditions nowadays so, visit ur grandparents or any elderly relative & find out the type of routines they used to carry out, the ceremonies & its purposes, life back then (don't believe evrythin u c in the movies), clothes, language, etc.
Tip: B sure 2 carry along a videocam or paper & pen, or anythin else u have in mind, to record the data coz u'll never know when it'll become handy.
6. Do the work
If ur really stuck @ home, help out by doing all the housework. Ur parents will surely b grateful. Let them take a break. My siblings & I used to clean & tidy up the whole place, & prepare some interestin dishes 4 our parents when they were out.
Tip: U cud also plan a small show-we used to sing, dance, etc. while our parents 'enjoyed' their meal.
7. Family photos
Now, if ur in the same situation that I'm in, then u'd probably have a shelf full of photos collecting dust. If u have a scanner @ home, scan all ur photos into the computer, sort them out by dates, events, ppl, etc. (u cud make copies of the same photo if it were 2 match different categories). U cud also get huge albums & start sorting them out.
Tip: Get other fly members to add photos according 2 the categories. That way, u'll have a larger database.
8. Get organised
I love to keep things that give a certain sentimental value or remind me of a certain incident such as movie tickets, greeting cards, wrapping paper, etc. So, what I did was I searched 4 one of those unused diaries I've been keeping and pasted them in. Next, I wrote down the time and incident(s) that I wanted 2 recall. This way, I know that my stuff is all in 1 place.
Tip: The greeting cards- U cud cut and paste and create new cards of ur own. My aunt did such a wonderful job with this, ppl wanted 2 buy her cards.
9. Help out those in need
If ur a good student, u cud actually get some of ur younger relatives 2gather & help them out with their work. My fren was so good @ it, her cousin called her frens to join in. Not only do u get 2 know ur fly better, u actually learn 2 deal with ppl & how 2 manage urself. Besides, u can help out in homes, join programmes hosted by NGOs with a cause, etc.
Tip: Need alot of patience!
I think that's it 4 now. My brain's kinda numb. Surely will add on to the list if I think of any more. Do share ur ideas, too. Love to hear them...cheerio!
