what are the odds?

just a day after posting about my Train Journey,

I actually did get to sit with a schoolmate of mine.

Hadn't seen her since we left school.. few years..

it was good catching up with her.

though it took me a while.. few seconds in fact, for me
to figure out who she was!!

i was so happy, shocked, disbelief was written all over my face :)

and now we're planning a school reunion haha!

A pebble at the sea shore..

I meant to post this and put in my two pennies worth but I had saved this a long time ago (think a couple of years). Don't want to mess with its original intent (didn't even put in the source of this article at that time, my bad). No copyright infringement intended, (the whole excerpt below was taken from another site) but I love the way this judge has crafted the whole thing. Spare a minute okey? Maybe more haha..

A small speech given in 1875 by an obscure judge. The name of the judge was The Honourable Joseph Neilson, Chief Justice of the City Court of Brooklyn. He gave this address at some sort of a gathering, (not in a court, I don't think). The publisher of the book in which I discovered this short speech, entitled it "The Growth of Principles."

 

"At the sea shore you pick up a pebble, fashioned after a law of nature, in the exact form that best resists pressure, and worn as smooth as glass. It is so perfect that you take it as a keepsake.

But could you know its history from the time when a rough fragment of rock fell from the overhanging cliff into the sea, to be taken possession of by the under currents, and dragged from one ocean to another, perhaps around the world, for a hundred years, until in reduced and perfect form it was cast upon the beach as you find it, you would have a fit illustration of what many principles, now in familiar use, have endured, thus tried, tortured and fashioned during the ages.

We stand by the river and admire the great body of water flowing so sweetly on; could you trace it back to its source, you might find a mere rivulet, but meandering on, joined by other streams and by secret springs, and fed by the rains and dews of heaven, it gathers volume and force, makes its way through the gorges of the mountains, plows, widens and deepens its channel through the provinces, and attains its present majesty.

Thus it is that our truest systems of science had small beginnings, gradual and countless contributions, and finally took their place in use, as each of you, from helpless childhood and feeble boyhood, have grown to your present strength and maturity. This is one of those posts that got stuck in my Drafts.. Thought I'll pull it out before I move on with other matters.. Edited version:

That week was all about celebrating. Apart from Christmas, my sister was done with SPM. So we had a back to back movie marathon - Appalam and Tron.

Appalam is probably the first Malaysian Tamil movie I've watched in the cinemas. I was holding on to my seat, hoping that they would not fail miserably and embarass us all.

Much to my surprise, it did not. In fact, the crowd was entertained all throughout the movie. I was. With those funny one-liners and some good acting, plus an already tried and tested formula on the storyline, not to forget the authencity of a Malaysian scenario flavoured the movie well. And Gana Pragasam's acting as the over-protective father definitely gave it the extra points.

I personally was not quite amused by the finale that was supposed to give an impact-the girl's performance in appreciation of her father's sacrifices.
Better work could have been done on that.

Moving on, we got an extra treat when my father decided to take us for Tron. I had not heard much of the movie so I did not really know what to expect. The graphics were ok.

My favourite scene would have to be the time when the lead character, Sam Flynn, arrives at The Grid and later on has to battle it out in a Life Cycle match... looooovveee those bikes and the way the whole match is executed.

Did not quite catch on with the story quick enough. It is a sequel so I guess watching the first movie would have helped. Well, we have the advantage of clicking our way to Wikipedia, so no complaints!

Common question.
I do appreciate the concern, don't get me wrong.

It's all how you look at it.

I've been travelling more than I ever did in my life.
I meet new people everyday.
I've met students who are doing a programme that did not even cross my mind.

Interesting conversations.
Different worlds.

The type of complete strangers u may end up with:
1. People who would talk abt their current trip. Or if they're usuals, their routines.
2. People who would acknowledge ur existence, return a smile and a nod of courtesy.
3. Those who are only in for part of the ride, keeping themselves busy for the little time they have and sling their bags at the sign of their station.
4. Those who just wanna shut out the world around them.
5. And sometimes, if ur lucky enough u may get to sit with a friend that u've got so much of catching up to do.

And this is not including the other more colourful events that take place in the train:
1. Once, the air conditioner had broken down, and my friend and I got to get seats beside each other in an upgraded coach.
2. Two old ladies of different backgrounds found one thing they have in common - they travel to and fro to the same destinations, they decided to purchase tickets together next time around.
3. An elderly lady who I help hold the door for had just returned from a vacation abroad. She said that her husband wasn't fond of travelling and since she's retired, she goes ahead doing the things she so loves.
4. I was checking this guy out even before we got onto the train. When we got in, he was sitting not far from me.. talking to his gf on the phone!
5. You should see how people create arguments when they're not sitting at their designated seats.
6. Just when you didn't have time to grab a meal, someone would be eating a mouth-watering, aroma-filled meal. Now, they do sell food n drinks on board.

I had to have a lifestyle change to adapt to the journeys. I enjoy it nevertheless.
It may be tiring at times but a little shift in schedule, adopting flexibility with discipline (contradicting, i know), and a positive outlook, you just strike a balance :)

Merlin's back!

Anyway, so is Morgana. Boy, she can play a wicked witch n still look good doing it!

Episode 1 was a two-hour special that started with action from the very beginning.

Hoping this season will be better than the others. Something to look forward to for the upcoming Fridays!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

2011 is going to be another chapter that I'll cherish forever and I hope that all of you would make it the best one yet.

As for my blog, believe me, I've got a list of posts still under Draft stage, I'd probably wanna complete and put it up before it becomes completely obsolete.. I've already deleted some rotten ones.

Thanks Hanim and everyone else who have been requesting that I update my blog. Appreciate it much. I am trying to get it done. I've just got so much I want to write, I wish I could verbally dictate my posts whenever I feel like it so that I wouldn't hv the hassle of coming online and TRYING to complete a full post everytime.

Reading Law

I've got barely a couple of months before my college hits the revision programme aka days filled with hours of lectures.

I'm here still trying to grasp everything thrown at me.

It's all exciting, believe me. The University of London has done an excellent job in preparing guides and everything possible under the sun to help us students benefit.. with the price of an expensive tuition fee of course..

We receive CDs which contain Study Packs (articles referred to in the Study Guides) plus a password that allows us to access the online databases of cases, journals, articles, etc. A student portal that keeps the students updated on the latest issues via newsletters, and allows for interaction with fellow students in the same boat in another part of the world.

Textbooks provided with a bulk of arguments in so many different levels, you will never look at an issue the same way again. Not to mention the huge amount of footnotes they have referred us to which I'd love to look at if I wasn't sitting for an exam at the end of it all. Time consuming.

So, what does a girl do? Be overwhelmed with the wealth of information around and just dive in or focus on the upcoming exams that she needs to get through with? And I'm not talking about a mere pass.

Strike a balance? Obviously. Target what you need to know, look it up, cap it at a certain limit 'cos if u keep going on and on, it's a whole Narnian world out there. Fascinating as it is, a target needs to be met.

To add on to it, there is a compulsory Research Question that needs to be completed. Maybe I'll just quench my thirst on this one hehe..
