Obituaries

My friend and I were discussing other matters when the issue of orbituaries came up.

She said, the first thing her grandmother asks when she comes out of the room is "khon maria?" (has anyone passed away?) --hope i got the punjabi part right--

Then, I spoke about my 30 year old uncle who flips to the orbituaries first when he opens the papers.

Yeah, it is not surprising to find out about people passing away anymore. The immediate shock is there, but as we grow older, we begin to accept it as it comes.

Sometimes, they are acquaintances to people who we love dearly. Sometimes, they are people who we know closely. Sometimes, it is a tragic story. Other times, it is a predicted yet dignified ending.

Still, those close to our hearts would always be spoken off and remembered by long after their departure. There are times when we come across events or even the littlest things that jolt our memory of what used to be.

My great-grandmother for instance, loved a simple white kuih, of which reminds us of her and her antiques at the age of 95, even to this day. I've seen husbands and wives who have lost their significant other half, and still speak of them as if they were still alive.

In the end, it is how we lived our lives that matter. To some people, it is about making a mark, or leaving behind a legacy (thinking of Michael Jackson right now). To others, it is about how much they can contribute so as to leave behind a better world. Some may want to live their best life and others live life to the fullest. Everyone has their own interpretation of what the above would mean to them.

To me, it is a balance to strike. Not to take things and the people around you for granted. To love whole-heartedly and give no place for hatred (it is time and energy consuming!). To make a difference wherever you go, not only to the environment around you, but also to yourself. To always feel humbled by the magnificent world out there.

(It is a long list, by the way haha.. I shall not dwelve into details but that would be the jist of it).

Have a great day ahead everyone!!
